The rules for undergraduate and postgraduate students are different, so it is important you understand the consequences of withdrawing from your course rather than intermitting, which is what we call suspending your studies or taking time out.
Tuition fees

If you’re a new student on an award-bearing course and withdraw within the first two weeks of the academic year, you won’t be charged any tuition fees.
If you withdraw later in the year, you’ll be charged a portion of your tuition fees depending on when you leave.
- Term 1: 25% of the annual fee
- Term 2: 50% of the annual fee
- Term 3: 100% of the annual fee
You must agree an official withdrawal date with your academic school. The university will also notify Student Finance, but you should contact them directly to stop future tuition fee loan payments. For exceptions, please see the university’s tuition fee policy.
Maintenance Loan (undergraduates)
Your Maintenance Loan payments will stop when you leave your course. As with tuition fees, you must agree an end date with your academic school and inform Student Finance yourself.
If you leave at the end of a term and tell Student Finance straight away, they may pause your next payment. However, timing doesn’t always align, so you might still receive a payment that you’re not entitled to. If that happens, any overpayment will be calculated from your withdrawal date but you won’t need to repay anything until you reach the normal repayment threshold.
If you plan to return to study in future, speak to our Student Advice team to check how this may affect your future funding.

ͯÑÕÊÓƵ Bursary
If you’re receiving a ͯÑÕÊÓƵ bursary, payments will stop once you withdraw. You may be asked to repay part or all of any bursary paid in the current year. Contact the Bursaries team at  bursaries@brighton.ac.uk or telephone 01273 643310 for guidance.
Postgraduate Masters Loan

If you’re studying at postgraduate level, your Postgraduate Masters Loan payments will stop if you withdraw. Student Finance will recalculate your loan entitlement based on how long you studied, which could lead to an overpayment.
To avoid this, tell your academic school and Student Finance as soon as possible to prevent the next instalment from being issued. If you owe tuition fees, rent for university accommodation or any other sundry debts such as library fines, email our Income department at  income@brighton.ac.uk as soon as possible.
